The Lodger brought me out for lunch today, paying with his own card but my money on it.. but we'll let the illusion continue as he thought he was the bees knees. And rightly so. I think he is.
As we chatted over lunch, a delicious soup, possibly the best soup he has ever had but if you live in our world you'll know that most meals for The Lodger are rated 10/10. If he knocks you points, I'd really be questioning your cooking skills.
We talked about the highlights of the summer. Staying on a dairy farm, school summer camp, horse camp, staying in the PWS holiday house, minding his grandparents house and animals, our family holiday, getting the new kittens, seeing people, having a nice time at home.. 'O and Mum, don't forget the delicious meals!'.
Phew, no need to question my cooking skills.
And then we got to the 'not the highlights!'
'Well there's only one of those', he says, 'That Maze!!'
On a nice day in August, I decided wouldn't it be lovely to go to the Maze. I packed up the snacks, suncream, raincoats and off I went with The Lodger and his younger brother aka The Super Sibling.
It started well. We were in the maze. We couldn't see over the hedges but we could see the tower we needed to get to and we were having fun. Fast forward 15 minutes and we are lost. We find ourselves back at the beginning.
'Eh, why are we back here. We should be in the tower!' announces The Lodger slighted exasperated.
'O this is the fun of a maze!' says I!
Off we go again, we pass the same people. A granny who looks equally flustered as me, as myself the above mentioned Super Sibling try to find the right way.
'We have been here before. I've seen that branch'! declares The Lodger, a bit more frustrated than before.
We're in it now. There's no going back. Younger bro is loving it. We are looping ourselves. I'm recognising branches.
We have a walking snack. This is the distraction he needs. He'll follow us along and we'll be at the tower in no time.
Snack finished. We were not.
At this stage, we're over an hour in. Its that rainy warm weather, where you can't take off the raincoat but you're melting. I know The Lodger is affected by this too, so I suggest a raincoat removal.
'Eh not with drops of rain falling from the sky!' says a very much frustrated Lodger.
Myself and younger bro are trying to control our inner anxiety of this lost in the maze situation from turning into laughter. We know laughing will not be met with joy from The Lodger.
'This is not funny. And this is not fun!' says The Lodger.
Younger bro is incredibly understanding of his brothers needs. He can read The Lodger's moods He knows when to press buttons and when to pause the annoying younger sibling thing he has going on sometimes.
'I think what we'll do is find the beginning again and go to the other easier maze. What do you think?' I say with everything crossed.
This was not met well.
The Lodger ran off down a cul-de-sac (phew) and if the hedge wasn't so thick he'd have been through it. Granted it was close to the tower. I could see his strategy!
'Mum, we are in a maze. So we will finish the maze!' says The Lodger
Younger bro quietly says to me 'We are never getting out of here!' and then he says ' Actually Lodger, I have a plan! Follow me!'. He didn't actually call him Lodger. He used his name.
So Younger Bro aka Super Sibling saves the day - we walk out of the entrance to the maze and in through the exit. The exit leads to the tower. We climb the tower!
We're at the top. Myself and Younger Bro are cheering. Other people know we cheated. We don't care. We have saved a meltdown in a maze. Well, younger bro did.
We look to to The Lodger
‘I’m not happy with going this way but I’m not going back into there again, ever and Mum I don't know how you ever thought that this would be fun!' says a very overwhelmed but holding it together Lodger!
So there, we have it. The Maze. The only low point of the summer. We'll take that.
In all honesty, it was a lovely summer. Did we have a few moments of PWS overwhelmness - over course. It's part and parcel of our lives but The Lodger regularly still tells us he loves his life. We hear it almost daily, so we must be doing something right.
